Materials Engineering Symposium on Innovations for Industry 2017 (MESII -2017)

Department of Materials Science and Engineering of University of Moratuwa, held a symposium, “Materials Engineering Symposium on Innovations for Industry 2017 (MESII -2017)” in collaboration with the local industry on 31st March 2017 at the Department for the first time. The theme of the symposium was “Leveraging Materials for a Smarter Future”.

The main objective of this event was to facilitate the industry and the research organizations to recognize and gain awareness on the research activities carried out by the final year undergraduates of the Department as well as provide an opportunity to get a comprehensive understanding about the activities and facilities of the Department. In many developed countries Materials Science and Engineering is a prominent area of industrial collaborations that has helped in the advancement of their industrial sector.

The meeting of the Department Industry Consultative Board (DICB)

The meeting of the Department Industry Consultative Board (DICB) of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering was held on 09 September at the Engineering Faculty board room. DICB was this year on the theme of “Future Trends in Materials Engineering – Towards Synthetic Judgments”.  Industry specialist representing a wide variety of industries participated in the meeting, along with the academic staff of the department.

The objectives of this meeting were to improve the network between university and the industry, and to identify the improvements which can be made to the curriculam and educational system so that MSE graduates are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills required for the industry. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Sampath Weragoda. During the panel discussion, chaired by Mr. Sampath Weragoda and Dr. S.U. Adikary,   views and suggestions on the undergraduate program, views and suggestions on the postgraduate program, and views and suggestions to improve department – industry interactions were discussed.

Dr. Indika De Silva has secured a one-year fellowship at the Electron Microscopy Centre (EMC)

Dr. Indika De Silva, a senior lecturer in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has gone for a one-year fellowship at the Electron Microscopy Centre (EMC), University of Wollongong (UOW), Australia.  Active members of his research group are Prof. E. Pereloma and Dr. A. G. Azdiar. Their research topic is “Characterisation of Transformation and Twinning Induced Plasticity (TRIP-TWIP) steels via X-ray diffraction”.

High manganese TRIP-TWIP steels become one of the most attractive and potential materials for manufacturing automobile components due to their superior combination of high strength (>1100 MPa) and ductility (≥ 55%). This research focuses on the microstructural evolutions during the isochronal annealing of 42% cold rolled TRIP-TWIP steel. Dr. Indika’s fellowship will be ended in February 2017.
